Elementary
Our Elementary Program is suitable for all grade 4-7 students. It consists of an interactive, 60-minute workshop, a four-week, take-home Climate Challenge, and a 30-minute wrap-up session.
Each class is facilitated in-person or virtually by one of our experienced Environmental Educators. The workshop is fun, informative and interactive. It covers the foundations of climate change science; its causes, impacts and solutions. It also provides examples of community, Indigenous and youth-led climate action. We also explore tangible actions students can take at home to lessen their own carbon emissions and collective actions they can contribute to in their local community. In doing so, we introduce students to the second phase of our program: the Cool It! Climate Challenge.
The Climate Challenge is a four-week, take-home curriculum consisting of 25 unique climate and environmental actions. These actions encourage students to work with their families to reduce their carbon footprint at home while also learning more about climate change and current local and provincial responses.
Our Elementary Climate Challenge is an interactive, digitally-enabled PDF document. Students can complete it on a personal laptop or tablet device, or print it out and work on it by hand.
Our Educator returns for a wrap-up session to reinforce the core-concepts from the workshop and give students the opportunity to ask questions and share what they’ve learnt from participating in the Challenge. Top students in each class receive prizes for their efforts. We provide supporting materials, tools and information for every action allowing students to complete it individually, with support from other family, or in collaboration with their classmates.
“I found this to be a very well organized and supported unit. I would love to participate with my grade 6’s next year!”
“My students really enjoyed participating in the challenge and learning a lot through the process.”
High School
Our High School Program is for grade 7-12 students of all disciplines. It consists of a two 60-minute workshops and a four-week, online Climate Challenge.
Over 4-6 weeks, classes undertake two 60-minute workshop modules delivered by one of our experienced Environmental Educators in-person or virtually. The workshops cover the foundations of climate change science and explore climate justice, supply chains, Indigenous and youth climate movements and multi–systems-analysis.
Module One focuses on climate change science, the future impacts of the climate crisis in British Columbia, climate and environmental justice, and local government, Indigenous and youth-led responses to climate change.
Module Two explores our consumption and production patterns and the Greenhouse Gas emissions embedded in these systems. We also explore how to make informed choices that lessen our impact on the climate, as well as how we can engage and participate collectively in our local communities.
The High School Climate Challenge is completed online on our dedicated platform: climatecool.org. Students participate over a four-week period and are supported to take actions at home to reduce their carbon impact. Students also explore how they can participate in collective mitigation and adaptation strategies at local, provincial and national levels. Additional extension opportunities are available for keen learners or whole classrooms.
